4-coat microcement finish

As microcement installers, we are always looking for ways in which we can offer alternatives to our clients, particularly in terms of cost, and without compromising the quality and overall look and feel of a project.    So we were delighted to discover a new microcement product and perfect companion to the full belt and braces 4-coat microcement system we install :  a 2-coat microcement product comprising only eco-resin with its own unique properties.

But what is the actual difference between the 4-coat and 2-coat systems (other than the obvious) and are there specific times when using one may be more advisable than the other?

The Technical Bit

Microcement is applied in layers or coats.  So each product is what it says on the tin…or tub in this case!   Essentially the difference between 4-coat and 2-coat microcement systems primarily relates to the number of application layers and the level of finish achieved.

The full belt and braces 4-coat microcement system involves as you would expect four layers of microcement: 2 basecoats and 2 layers of finish or topcoats.  Within the basecoats is an embedded mesh, and this, together with the thicker finish, gives it a strength and durability making it suitable for use on areas subject to heavy traffic and horizontal surfaces such as floors.

The 2-coat microcement involves two main layers: a base coat and a top finish coat.   Typically, this system is quicker to apply but might not have the same level of durability as the 4-coat system, thereby making it a more appropriate product for walls and ceilings.

Look and Feel

The additional finishing layers or topcoats in the 4-coat microcement allow for a smoother, more refined finish and offers a greater control in achieving a particular look ie. more polished or uniform.  It has an industrial aesthetic, with crisp qualities associated with it.

While it will still undoubtedly look good and remains highly durable, the 2-coat microcement may not have quite the same depth or refinement to it.  It does lend itself to a rich, organic aesthetic similar to tadelakt but with greater water resistance and durability.

Any Other Benefits?

The 4-coat System offers superior durability due to the extra layers, providing more protection from wear and tear, making it more suited for high-traffic areas or surfaces subject to heavy use (e.g. floors, countertops).  It is also fully waterproof even before sealers are applied.

Inevitably due to fewer layers, the 2-coat system is slightly less durable than its thicker counterpart, making it more suitable for vertical surfaces such as walls or ceilings and surfaces that won’t see as much daily use.  It is water-resistant making it a great alternative for areas like bathrooms or wet rooms.

Both products require specific cleaning products to be used (as recommended by our supplier) and will not sustain bleach or other abrasive cleaning products.  Apart from cleaning, they do not require any significant levels of maintenance. It is however important to point out that neither product is indestructible.

Which is faster to apply?

As you would expect, more layers means more processes and more time to apply, with each layer needing sufficient time to dry before the application of the next coat.   Therefore the 2-coat system is faster and more straightforward to apply and is often chosen for quicker installations.

More coats, more cost?

Yes, typically the 4-coat system is more expensive because it requires more materials and labour for the application.  The 2-coat system is generally more affordable due to fewer layers being applied and less labour-intensive work.  This can make it a great alternative wall finish if you have a slightly more constrained budget.

Colour choices?

Both finishes come in a wide range of standard colours and bespoke shades including Farrow and Ball, Little Green and Pantone. Samples are available on request from our suppliers.
