Understanding clay plaster
Clay plaster is a 100% natural building material comprised of clay, sand and pigments. Suitable for full interiors or feature walls, clay plaster can be applied in a number of ways, giving you a number of options for the finish that suits your project best. Furthermore, clay is available in a range of natural and custom colours, making it a perfect choice for contemporary, minimalist or earthy design schemes.
Sealable for added resistance from water and dirt, clay plaster is also usable in bathrooms and high-traffic areas, providing a natural alternative to microcement and lime plasters.
Benefits of clay plaster
We use this versatile product to create surfaces that are breathable and naturally regulate humidity, reducing condensation and mould, providing function to your home as well as a beauty. A hand-applied finish, each clay plaster surface is completely unique. Clay plaster is reparable, meaning it is maintainable without full resurfacing. VOC-free and non-toxic, clay plaster is the sustainable choice for your home.
Frequently Asked Questions about clay plaster
Where can I use clay plaster?
Because of its natural qualities and its breathability, clay plaster is suitable for most interior walls and ceilings, including:
- Living areas and open‑plan spaces
- Bedrooms
- Home offices and studios
- Restaurants, cafés and boutique hotels
- Yoga and wellness spaces
It is not suitable for floors.
Can I use clay plaster in my bathroom?
Clay plaster works well in bathrooms with good ventilation, but it should not be used in areas with direct water contact, such as inside showers.
Is clay plaster durable?
Yes — if properly maintained, clay plaster is long‑lasting and robust, ageing beautifully over time. Minor scuffs can often be repaired without the need to redo the whole area.
How do I maintain clay plaster?
Clay plaster is fairly low‑maintenance. Day-to-day, it only needs gentle dusting or wiping with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Small marks or scuffs can often be blended out or repaired, keeping the finish looking beautiful for years to come.
Is clay plaster expensive?
Of all the finishes we install, clay plaster is probably the least expensive. But that doesn’t mean you compromise on quality…far from it. Its longevity, rich aesthetic quality and acoustic benefits make it excellent value for clients seeking a premium natural finish. Costs vary depending on the surface area, number of rooms, chosen finish and project complexity. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us to get a quote.
How long does installation of clay plaster take?
The installation usually takes about a week, and we also recommend drying and curing time to help you get the best from the product. All details are contained within our Surface Preparation and Aftercare Guidance, which accompanies any formal estimate should you choose to proceed.
Does clay plaster work with underfloor heating?
Absolutely. Clay plaster performs very well with underfloor heating because it helps regulate humidity and temperature, contributing to a comfortable indoor environment. We just have to ensure that the correct substrate sits between the underfloor heating system and the clay plaster finish.
Is clay plaster really that environmentally friendly?
Extremely. Clay plaster is one of the most sustainable wall finishes available, being made from natural, abundant materials, free from chemicals and VOC's, breathable, so supporting healthy indoor air quality, and fully recyclable.
It is a perfect solution for eco-conscious designs and low‑impact building practices.
What colours and textures are available for clay plaster?
Clay plaster comes in a wide range of natural tones, from warm earth colours to soft neutrals and contemporary blues, greens and greys. Finishes can be smooth, softly textured or more sculptural depending on your taste. Pigments are mineral-based, so colours remain rich and stable over time.
